The dessert before her was not beautiful. She wanted to be clear about this and would be sure to say so. It sat on a chipped plate, slightly off-center. A plain tart, brown at the edges, its surface appearing bruised where the fruit had sunk during baking. And on top of it, a spoonful of glistening cream so thick it did not move. Her careful trained eye measured maybe three inches high. “Mon Dieu!”

She leaned closer. This was not cream from a carton. This cream had never seen the inside of a refrigerator case, she was sure. This cream had been made by hand, with lard. “Pork lard!” she whispered in an excited rush. Rendered slowly, whipped with sugar and patience until it transcended the délice ordinaire. Her hands moved instinctively toward a bag on the space beside her.

From the bag, she pulled out an old notebook with rounded edges, its yellow cover soft from handling. A blank page:

February 1, 2026, 11:11am Patsy’s Perfect Pastries

Tart. Plain. Fruit sunken. Cream: lard. Three inches. Does not move. Mon Dieu! Does not move! Délice ordinaire.

She set the pen down. She picked up her fork. The cream gave way slowly and with the sound of moist confection bringing a grin to her face. Beneath it the fruit was a dark purple falling in sweet clumps onto her fork and into the cream.

“How is zis possible?” Her mouth full of Patsy’s Plum Pardonne. “Zis is fabulous,” she erupted! Going for her pen, sweet cream in the corners of her mouth.

She wrote fast, her handwriting tilting downward with the letters smaller toward the end of each line.

Crust: honest. Not trying to impress. (Le Pauvre Petit) Fruit: plum, slow cooked, almost jammy but not yet. The cream. THE CREAM. Lard base, hand whipped, possibly a pinch of salt? Ask Patsy. Do NOT forget to ask Patsy.

She underlined “ask Patsy” twice.

She ate slowly now, realizing how little was left on the plate.

The last bite she held on her fork for a moment longer. Plum, cream, a crumble of crust barely holding on. Then it was gone. She closed her eyes and popped them open again. A sound left her.

She opened her notebook.

Verdict: Le Pauvre Petit is not poor and it is not little. It is the best thing I have eaten this month and I have eaten many things this month. I will write about it on Thursday. Patsy will not expect this.

She closed the notebook and wiped the cream from the corners of her mouth with the back of her hand. Then Tilda paid her bill, tucked the notebook into her bag, and stepped into the street where the morning light was doing something very specific to the cobblestones that she would also need to write about later.

Tilda also has thoughts on cake.

When I started building Crumb Canvas, I wanted to create something that made people smile - the way you smile when you catch something unexpected and it reminds you the world still has magic in it. Watching this universe take shape, seeing your responses, knowing these tiny characters found their way into your day has been the real gift.

This year also brought some wonderful validation:

Seeing these stories resonate on the festival circuit has validated what I believe: that warmth, heart, and the distinct tactile quality of this art have a place in the future of storytelling. But beyond the awards, my greatest joy has been simply creating this world.

A Note on 2026

As my own inbox fills with newsletters, I’m acutely aware that I may be contributing to someone’s digital overwhelm. So I’m scaling back the frequency of these posts. I’m not stepping away. I simply want what arrives in your inbox to feel worth opening, not overwhelming.

I’ll still be here building Crumb Canvas. New characters are waiting to introduce themselves. Storytelling techniques I’m eager to explore. The work continues!

I have been asked more than once about how I create what you see. Story first certainly. And once the story is locked in, it’s time to dress it. Early iterations of Golden Foster concepts were fun and really stretched the imagination thinking how I might tell a story with them. It’s one of my favorite parts of the process.

For anyone unaware I create these shorts using generative AI. Gen AI is a beautiful Frankenstein of possibilities. Every generation opens the door to another possibility. The Blind Banana Boys could be jazzy, folk-inspired, and wearing sunglasses. The Carb Collective could be a duo. Every choice branches into fifty more choices.

A focus on emotion and aesthetic should yield an experience for the viewer. Without it, the experience bounces around. Bouncing is great for ideas. Terrible for viewer experience.

Maybe it’s less important with photorealism but with 3D animation and stylized work, you’re asking people to accept a world that doesn’t exist. That requires a more deliberate visual experience.

For Golden Foster, that meant locking into the Crumb Canvas aesthetic while being clear that it was a cautionary tale told with a hint of darkness.

The cautionary tale element expressed itself a little too starkly at first. Although I can imagine a whole other version of the story from these (and I love them too.)

I love that gen AI can help story tellers craft new tales. The sad part of using these tools is, you also see all the stories you don’t get to tell.

The Screening

Shelf Life screened at the AMC Arizona Center to a small audience. The festival was more modest in scale than I anticipated - intimate would be a kind way to describe it.

The festival itself was smaller and less formal than I expected. It was more of a gathering than the curated event I’d imagined. But that ended up not mattering as much as seeing the work on screen.

In my last newsletter, I said I was nervous about how the film would land. The audience was small - about a dozen people - and they responded with the same polite applause to most films in the lineup. So I couldn’t gauge specific audience connection the way I’d hoped. But that turned out not to matter as much as I thought it would.

What I Learned

The most valuable part was seeing the film on a theater screen. The aesthetic choices I worried about - the storybook illustration style, the intentional roughness, the non-photorealistic visuals - they all translated well in that context.

The film was unique. Nothing else in the lineup looked or felt like it, and I mean that in a good way. The humor landed, the pacing held, and those “rough edges” I was nervous about actually made sense on a big screen.

Seeing that the creative decisions held up outside of my editing software was the validation I needed.

DESCENT

I ended up not attending DESCENT’s screening. It was scheduled late on the second night, and I decided to conserve energy after the first day.

The Takeaway

I said in my last post that I’d bet on story over shine. Seeing the film in that context, I think that bet paid off. Not in terms of overwhelming audience reaction, but in terms of the work holding together as a coherent piece.

That’s what I went to find out, and I got my answer.

What’s Next

I’m thinking about what’s next for this Substack and my work more broadly. I’m interested in exploring different kinds of stories and may shift focus in the coming months.

I have news that’s both exciting and slightly anxiety-inducing.

Shelf Life has been officially selected for the AI Film Festival in Phoenix, Arizona (October 30 - November 1).

If you’re not familiar with Shelf Life yet: it’s a dark absurdist comedy set in Crumb Canvas, the animated storybook world I created. When bread across the town of Custard Cove suddenly develops emotional awareness, an investigation unfolds to solve a crisis that challenges everything the town knows about food and consciousness.

Yes, it’s about bread with feelings. Yes, I’m serious. And yes, a festival programmer thought enough of it to include it in their lineup.

A Second Film (Different Brand)

I should also mention I have a second film selected for this festival: DESCENT, a haunting 50-second experimental short exploring themes of isolation, survival, and the human condition in an alien landscape.

Why This Feels Big

This will be the first time Shelf Life screens on a theater screen with an in-person audience. Actual strangers who chose to watch AI films on Halloween weekend in Phoenix.

I’m excited and nervous in equal measure.

The film and Crumb Canvas emerged pretty organically. I wanted to create something lighthearted and whimsical, a space for playful storytelling. I have thousands of images in my archive, and one image of a single piece of crying bread sparked the question: what if bread had feelings?

That became the seed for an entire narrative.

The Aesthetic Choice

I made a deliberate choice with Shelf Life that runs counter to current AI filmmaking trends. Many AI-generated shorts pursue photorealistic polish and technical perfection.

Shelf Life embraces visual absurdity, storybook illustration aesthetics, and deliberately non-glossy visuals. I knew this approach would alienate viewers seeking technical spectacle, which made the storytelling non-negotiable.

The narrative had to be strong enough to carry an audience through intentionally rough edges and stylistic shifts.

I bet on story over shine. We’ll see if that pays off in Phoenix.

What’s Next

I’ll be attending the festival in person (first festival attendance - wish me luck), and I’ll be documenting the experience for a detailed post-festival debrief.

Things will be quiet here through the rest of October while I prep for the festival, but I’ll have a full report when I get back in early November.

Meet the Jam Makers

Bramble Roundbottom, the Generous Sampler

“The children can always tell which batch has the most love in it.” - Bramble Roundbottom

In his cozy turquoise sweater and bright orange scarf, Bramble Roundbottom tends to the Canvas's finest raspberry preserves. He samples every batch (“quality control,” he insists) and always makes extra for the neighbors. His raspberry jam has those tiny seeds that pop between your teeth - exactly as raspberry jam should be.

The children know exactly which window is his. They visit weekly, drawn by something deeper than sweetness. “The children can always tell which batch has the most love in it,” Bramble explains, and watching him carefully set aside the sweetest jar for Emma's Tuesday visit, you know he's absolutely right.

Marvin Kettleworth, the Methodical Maker

“The strawberries trust the coat now. Took months to rebuild that relationship.” - Marvin Kettleworth

Marvin Kettleworth approaches his classic strawberry preserves with unwavering precision. That blue coat? It's not just clothing; it's essential equipment. He tried making jam without it once and received a very nasty note from the Crumbkins. He's been buttoned down and methodical ever since. There’s something magic in it.

“The strawberries trust the coat now,” he explains with complete sincerity. “Took months to rebuild that relationship.” Forty-seven clockwise stirs, rest, forty-seven counter-clockwise. Always. The result? Strawberry preserves with that perfect balance of sweet and bright tartness.

Patience Tweedlebottom, the Persimmon Perfectionist

“The persimmons will tell me when they're ready. They always do.” - Patience Tweedlebottom

The Canvas's most mysterious jam maker, Patience Tweedlebottom has mastered the art of persimmon preserves. Those orange, tomato-shaped fruits are tricky, too early and they're bitter, too late and they're mushy. Patience waits for the exact right moment.

What does he do during all that waiting? “That's between me and the persimmons,” he says with a knowing smile. His preserves have an almost honeyed sweetness with a hint of spice that makes people pause mid-bite and wonder. The persimmons keep their secrets until exactly the right moment. So does he.

Pip Wondermelon, the Peach Master

“I follow the same recipe every time. Why does it keep getting better?” - Pip Wondermelon

Throughout the Canvas, everyone knows about Pip Wondermelon, the Peach Master, though he himself remains charmingly oblivious to his legendary status. He approaches each jar of his famous preserves with quiet concentration, forever puzzled by his own success.

“I follow the same recipe every time,” he says with that look of focused wonder. “Why does it keep getting better?” His peach jam glows like tiny suns in their jars, perfectly balanced between sweet and tart. The neighbors secretly hope he never figures out how truly extraordinary he really is, if he did, he might raise his prices!

From Bramble's generous tastings to Pip's focused humility, these are the faces behind the Canvas's sweetest traditions. Four jam makers, four stories, one perfect morning ritual that makes the whole neighborhood feel like home.

Every scone deserves a story this good.

This week in Custard Cove, what was supposed to be a quiet afternoon nearly turned into the Great Garden Incident of Tuesday. It all started when Tilda Crumb discovered what she declared “the perfect contemplation corner” in the secret garden, a lovely serene spot with dappled sunlight that makes even the most pressing philosophical questions (like whether jam belongs inside or on top of everything) seem perfectly manageable.

What Tilda didn't know was that the Garden Society had already reserved that spot for their weekly meeting. They'd been planning to discuss two critical matters: the proper height for raspberry crowns and whether three or four berries make for better cake diplomacy. These were serious topics requiring serious attention, and they'd arranged for The Crumbkins to cater the affair.

The Crumbkins, however, had somehow misunderstood catering to mean setting up a market stall. They arrived with their striped awning, tiny cash box, and prices that would make a banker weep.

The strawberry layer cake? Priced as if it were made of actual gold. Those perfectly piped petit fours? A small fortune each. The macarons found this absolutely hilarious and spent the morning making jokes about premium pastries.

Poor Little Peachy had arrived in what she proudly announced was her Tuesday best - a spectacular strawberry hat that perfectly coordinated with her coral layers - only to find herself completely upstaged by the market stall chaos. She spent the first hour sulking behind the daisies, muttering about “commercial disruptions.”

Tilda stood in the middle of it all, journal in hand, processing how her quiet contemplation spot had suddenly become Custard Cove's contested real estate.

The standoff might have lasted all afternoon if it weren't for Crumb, the Quality Control Crumbkin, who suddenly appeared with a clipboard and a very serious expression. “Emergency protocols,” he whispered conspiratorially to the other Crumbkins. “The emotional spillover could compromise the entire afternoon's structural integrity.”

Within minutes, the original catering order materialized as if by magic. Tables appeared, proper china was arranged with precision, and the most perfectly brewed Earl Grey began working its diplomatic magic.

The Crumbkins, realizing their mistake, sheepishly packed up their market stall. The Garden Society graciously invited Tilda to join their meeting, and Little Peachy was properly admired for her Tuesday fashion sense returning her usual sunny disposition.

As the afternoon settled into its proper rhythm of tea and gentle conversation, the great berry debate resumed. The Garden Society was split down the middle; three berries or four for optimal cake diplomacy?

Tilda, sipping her tea thoughtfully, offered the deciding wisdom: “Four berries, definitely. Four is more, and more can open any door. Plus,” she added with the kind of logic that only makes sense in Custard Cove, “it leaves room for compromise when three feels too few and five feels excessive.”

The motion carried unanimously.

As the sun began its lazy descent and the macarons settled onto their plates with contented sighs, having thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's entertainment.

The secret garden corner, no longer quite so secret, has become a regular gathering spot. The Garden Society has officially adopted it for their weekly meetings, Tilda uses it for her important contemplations, and The Crumbkins have promised to stick to actual catering for future events, though they're keeping their market stall license, just in case.
